An investigation on the damping ratio of marine oil slicks in synthetic aperture radar imagery

چکیده
The damping ratio has recently been used to indicate the relative internal oil thickness within slicks observed in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. However, there exists no well-defined and evaluated methodology for calculating ratio. In this study, we review prior work regarding outline its theoretical practical aspects. We show that most often yields values differ, some cases significantly, same scene. Three alternative methods are tested on multi-frequency data sets of verified acquired from DLR's F-SAR instrument, NASA's Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR) Sentinel-1. All yielded similar results variations slick. proposed derivation were found be sensitive proportion covered pixels versus open water azimuth direction, as well scene size question. fully automatable histogram method provides consistent even under challenging conditions. Comparisons between optical imagery derived using good agreement relatively thicker slick areas two different types sensors.

The Object Detection Efficiency in Synthetic Aperture Radar Systems
The main purpose of this paper is to develop the method of characteristic functions for calculating the detection characteristics in the case of the object surrounded by rough surfaces. This method is to be implemented in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems using optimal resolution algorithms. By applying the specified technique, the expressions have been obtained for the false alarm and cor...
متن کاملPolarimetric Segmentation of Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery
This paper considers the problem of clutter segmentation in fully polarimetric, high resolution, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. The goal of segmentation is to partition an image into regions of homogeneous terrain types (grass regions, tree regions, roads, etc.). Three approaches to segmentation are examined: (1) the optimal polarimetric classifier, (2) the optimal normalized polarimet...
متن کاملDetection and Classification of Objects in Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery
This is an amalgamation of a number of reports written by the author when he was contracted to DSTO through CSSIP. The reports concern the detection of faint trails, and the theory and evaluation of a number of existing and novel methods for the detection and classification of ground and maritime targets within SAR imagery. The publication of this collection allows the results to be available w...
متن کاملDespeckling Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery using the Contourlet Transform
A novel method of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image despeckling using the contourlet transform representation is presented. Justification for the use of the contourlet signal representation, originally developed for natural images, is given. Methods of evaluating the despeckling performance of various algorithms are provided. Finally, a comparison of performance of multilook processing, wave...
متن کاملLow-Backscatter Ocean Features in Synthetic Aperture Radar Imagery
any ocean surface signatures in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery are characterized by relatively low normalized radar cross section values. Distinguishing among these signatures objectively can be very difficult, especially with only the singleband and single-polarization SAR imagery available from the European Remote Sensing satellites and the Canadian Radarsat-1. Nevertheless, distincti...
